Math in Culture units and problems are designed for foreign language teachers of French, German and Spanish.
The next 10 pages list math problems Spanish teachers can use to support other discipline areas in your school, here Math.
Why support Math? We all know that state testing is administered for various disciplines in our building. Administrators call on the whole faculty to help support efforts to improve school and district test scores.
Use these motivating word problems to focus on Math objectives while still incorporating culture in your daily lesson plan. Let your administrators know you are contributing to the team effort to maintain and/or raise scores and still address the 5 C’s of National Standards in Foreign Languages: Communication, Cultures, Comparisons, Connections and Communities.
Suggestion: use these problems as warm-ups at least a month before state testing, or as an end-of-class “cool down.”
Use them to engage students in cultural discussions. Use your own “story telling” abilities to tell about your own cultural experiences through travel. Perhaps these real life experiences will trigger a memory you can share with your students. Students love “story telling” and learning more about their teacher. By using these you are meeting the 5 C’s in the National Standards for Foreign Languages: Communication, Cultures, Comparisons, Connections, Communities.
Not that good at Math? Give one of these problems to a student to present and teach the class.
Use them to improve reading via word problems.
Use them to enhance problem solving.
Look for other specific language products you need at my site. I’m always under construction and adding more.
