Think of some goals that you have for students when it comes to building their literacy in mathematics. There’s a good chance that at least 1 or 2 of your goals involve students explaining their mathematical thinking, rather than just writing an answer down without thought or reason. Without seeking an explanation, reasons, or justification, it would be much harder to support a student who is struggling. Where would one begin?
I have developed a video to begin helping with this process. It was quite simple to make actually. I walked around downtown with a camera for about an hour. Then, I compiled the footage into a short video clip. Kids can do this with relative ease, given the equipment!
It comes with the video link to the short, interesting movie clip AND a cool sorting activity that students love!
It's already been used in hundreds of classrooms!
