Your students will be engaged from the beginning to the end of this "real world" math project. Each student will randomly be assigned to a career and matching salary amount. After researching the career they will look into the cost of living and plan a budget. This project sparks great discussion and can be used when completing a unit on percentages, end of the year, for enrichment or for a career class.
Included with this project is an introduction activity in which students will play a "matching game" to see if they can correctly match occupations with salaries. After the eye opening introduction and discussion students will be assigned one of 14 different occupations with an approximate salary. They will then complete each of the five parts of this project and present their research/budget. The five parts of the project include:
Income and Expenses-Students will complete their monthly income and expenses calculations as well as create a pie chart.
Rental Research-Students will research an apartment they can rent according to their budget.
Savings-Students will list items they would like to save for and calculate how long it will take to save for these items.
