The beginning of the school year is a good time to help students recognize that math is everywhere and therefore is important. This ipad project not only gives your class an opportunity to use the ipads, but it causes the students to really think about the ways math plays into their everyday lives. An added bonus is that this project comes with a rubric so you already have a grade right near the beginning of the year. Help your students see the value in math class by bringing it "home" to them with this creative and interactive project.
In my store, Teaching Near the River, there is a companion presentation entitled Math is Everywhere: Examples in Everyday Life that illustrates through photos some of the ways math is found around a city. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Math-is-Everywhere-Examples-in-Everyday-Life-2384670. You do not need this in order for students to complete the project, but it IS a great springboard for class discussions.
