Students and teachers LOVE books by Mo Willems. Here is a great way to extend your book or author study...through math problem solving!! Students find the characters so engaging, so capitalize on their enthusiasm by developing their problem solving skills or working on math concepts. These math problem solving activities are meant to accompany a study or use of Mo Willem’s Pigeon and/or Elephant and Piggie series of books.
This resource includes 30 math problems and resources for an end of the unit food celebration. The problems are provided in a full page color version, a full page black and white version and a half page black and white version.
The 30 problems address the following math concepts:
*equal sharing – division
*multiplicative thinking – repeated addition
Some of the problems are open ended . For example students can select the coins they use to represent the money amount. There are also open ended addition/subtraction problems where students select the numbers they use.
*project the large color slides to introduce problems, solve problems as a class or for students to share their thinking
*use the full page black and white or half page b&w pages to create student booklets to use during an author study unit
*use the problems throughout the year as you read one of the books or during the appropriate math unit
There are also resources for an end of the unit “Hot Dog Party” or “Ice Cream Party”. Use the café/order forms for students to purchase their food. Project the menu slide and have your students fill out their order, find the total and use manipulative coins to pay their bill. You can also enjoy an actual food treat. The store sign can be printed as a poster for your classroom door or just projected on your board. A great way to reward all of their hard work and making lasting memories!!
