The 27 reproducible worksheets in this product constitute Unit 11 in the MathQuest 1 workbook. This unit focuses on manipulating concrete materials and using pictorial representations to help students identify and represent numbers from 1 to 99. It builds on the development of place value to 19 in the previous chapter and sets the foundation for the addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers.
As noted in the previous unit, the concepts related to place value are abstract and difficult for young children to grasp. To help students internalize place value, the unit involves them in making and counting groups of ten. These are recorded in two ways: by grouping objects in sets of tens and then writing the corresponding numeral. This concept is then extended to sets of tens and ones in which the numeral is written as a sum of a multiple of 10 and a number of units. This teaching is embedded in the context of the nursery rhyme "Sing a Song of Sixpence.” The phrase, “four and twenty blackbirds” leads naturally to the representation of 24 as a sum of tens and ones, though most children may never have sampled blackbird pie.
