The 17 reproducible worksheets in this product constitute Unit 16 in the MathQuest 1 workbook. This unit focuses on manipulating concrete materials and using pictorial representations to help students learn how to add any pair of 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping.
This unit is an extension, suitable for those children who have demonstrated a solid understanding of number and place value concepts. It presents a carefully-sequenced development of addition with 2-digit numbers by first adding a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number, then adding multiples of 10 and then adding pairs of 2-digit numbers without regrouping. This progression is then repeated for additions that require regrouping.
This instruction is embedded in the context of the nursery rhyme "Ring-A-Round-A-Roses.” If a ring of children consists of 10 individuals, then we can group the class members into rings of 10 and singles. Then we can act out stories involving the class and represent these stories as the addition of 2-digit and single-digit numbers.
