The reproducible worksheets in this product constitute Unit 4 in the MathQuest 1 workbook. This unit focusses on manipulating concrete materials and participating in, observing, and discussing subtractive situations. It is recommended that a variety of language patterns be modeled, so that children can relate expressions such as "left," "ran away," "gave away," and "still remain" to the subtraction process.
The concept of subtraction is difficult to illustrate, because once the subtractive action takes place the initial set is no longer visible. To facilitate understanding, place holders are used to show the initial set. For example, on page 59 the holes in the ground clearly indicate how many members were in the initial set. The teaching of subtraction to 5 is embedded in the context of the nursery rhyme "Old Mother Hubbard," and on page 59, we see Mother Hubbard's dog performing his own mental subtraction.
