The 8 reproducible worksheets in this product constitute Unit 5 in the MathQuest 1 workbook. This unit focuses on manipulating concrete materials and using pictorial representations to help students learn the properties of various geometric solids. Students distinguish between different solids and relate them to real-world objects in their environment. Familiar terms such as “can-shaped” should be employed to describe cylindrical objects, but the proper terminology is also encouraged to relate the appropriate language to the mathematical models. They also learn how to identify and extend patterns in problem solving.
In this unit, the children have opportunities to develop their sorting and patterning skills. The children sort geometric solids as they consider whether the solids roll and/or stack and whether they would fall or not fall (page 78). Some children may identify a solid as having the attributes of 2 sets (e.g., a solid that rolls and stacks). The teaching of geometric solids is embedded in the context of the nursery rhyme "Humpty Dumpty.” Poor Humpty may not have fallen if he enjoyed a more robust stacking property…but then we might not have a nursery rhyme to report his fall.
