When I taught indigenous five year olds I was fresh from university. Nothing had prepared me to bridge the gap between Standard Australian English and indigenous language/experience. I was told to do my best. (Back then no-one else knew how to do it either.)
I soon worked out that the pure maths side of their brains was efficient but the language I was using was not helping them learn. I came to understand that I had to teach 'maths language' in a precise and systematic way. This screener is a long way from the one I started with, but screen them I did, and I found the words that presented barriers.
Over the years I refined the screen to identify maths language gaps in various class groups from the city to the country. This version is my best shot and it has worked for a number of years now. It is free because it is still work in progress.
When I have very young students referred to me, the first learning barriers I focus on are vision and hearing. Once those are eliminated it's time to identify skill deficits. This screener can be used as the first step to target the maths language concepts that are a barrier to learning.
