This die could be useful for playing shape games. (You would need a selection of circles, squares, triangles and rectangles) One idea - the player throws the die then chooses the shape, from the selection, which is on the top of the die. If the four shapes come up, the player is allowed to take the four shapes. The object of the game is to lay the shapes in such a way that they make a picture of something e. g. a man, a woman, a house etc. The teacher can decide what the children should make or the children could decide.
While playing, the children should name the shape on top of the die after it has been thrown. If someone is in charge of giving out the shapes, the child could then ask 'Can I have a _____please?' (naming the shape) or 'May I have a ____ please?
Naming the shapes helps the children to remember the names and asking for the shape gives practice with the structure needed when asking for something. Both of these strategies would be particularly useful for children learning English.
