Why is mathematical vocabulary essential?
There are 3 main ways in which children’s failure to understand mathematical vocabulary may affect their progress: children do not respond to questions in lessons; they cannot do a task they are set; they do poorly in tests. This may be because they do not understand the instructions, or they are unfamiliar with the mathematical terms. It is essential that we teach the vocabulary of mathematics and also mathematical instruction so that our students can participate in lessons and become successful mathematicians.
The instructional vocabulary section of this download in the teacher checklists section will help you to ensure you are familiarising your students with this aspect of learning maths which is often overlooked.
Included in this download you will find:
*Sets of vocabulary cards which can be enlarged and used for display, and also laminated and used as a teaching resource for playing games
*Cards are colour coded for each element of mathematics
*Checklist for teachers so you can highlight the vocabulary you teach as you progress through the year to ensure you have covered everything
*some general mathematical vocabulary and some instructional vocabulary within the teacher checklist, not included in the cards
*operation posters for addition and subtraction
*Number posters with corresponding dice dots for numbers 1 – 10
*Number and digit cards 0 – 20
