This version of Mathsketball involves a list of MA 2011 Common Core Standards, Teacher Notes and an Excel Solution Spreadsheet designed to allow students and teachers to check for accuracy.
This activity takes student out of the classroom and onto the basketball court. Students will track their shots and use the results to strengthen and reinforce their math skills in a fun and exciting way. This activity provides practical applications for percentages, averages(mean), pie charts, scatter plots, linear equations and critical thinking skills.
Students spend ten to fifteen minutes taking shots at the basketball hoops while other students monitor time and progress. When the data is collected the students work in groups to find the percentage of shots that were successful. They also use this data to create a pie chart and a scatter plot. Students will also use this data to generate equations that will be used to predict future success rates and statistics.
