Grades 2 – 6
You and your students will enjoy singing and moving to this professionally arranged “groovy” song. Handy Lyric sheet uses Shift 3 in the Common Core Standards “Staircase of Complexity” providing appropriate and necessary scaffolding and support to encourage reading. Other standards include poetry, craft & structure, retelling stories and Group Singing!
You can also discuss the point of view of the composer and why this style of music was chosen. For Shift 5 Writing From Sources, students can write their own lyrics or add another verse to the song.
Promotes reading, thirst for knowledge, anti-bullying and tolerance.
Optional Activity: They may also enjoy creating their own “book cover” with a book they’ve read on the outside of the folder and attach my handy lyric sheet inside so they can sing along. I decorated binders (a file folder would work) to look like the many books mentioned in the book Matilda. It is used as a prop as they can move it “up and down and everywhere around” as the song lyrics suggest to create a kinesthetic experience.
