Product Description
A great way to tackle Critical Thinking skills and Prepositions! A Matrix is a grid, where the objects (they could be pictures, words, numbers, etc.) going across the grid go together in some way, while the objects going down the grid go together in a different way. The simplest grid would have 3 shapes of the same color going across the top (a circle, a square, and a triangle maybe). Each shape would change color and increase in size as you go down the grid (small, medium and large). When you present a blank grid, and provide a picture in 2 or 3 different squares of the grid, it is possible to “solve” the rest of the matrix. Your students have to figure out where the rest of the pictures go, and why. Students take turns choosing a picture and placing it where they think the picture should go on the Matrix Grid. They have to explain why they think a picture should be placed in a specific square. Students can practice giving and following directions by explaining where a picture needs to go, instead of pointing or placing the picture themselves. Once the matrix is solved, discuss how the pictures relate to each other going across and going down. Compare and contrast the pictures on the grid too. When your students get accustomed to how a matrix works, you can make a matrix bigger, or put fewer pictures on the matrix to start. Use the untitled blank matrix grid and keep all the pictures face down, so students get even fewer clues about the matrix. You can ask them to guess what the matrix will be about from the picture they pick. Have your students give a title to the matrix at the end and explain why they would give that title. Set a timer and see if they can beat the clock. It is challenging, engaging, and fun. In SLP terms, you now have the perfect environment that can target the following skills:
• Using and Understanding Prepositions
• Giving and Following Directions
