This is a flexible activity from Katie McNally's store. There is a FREE teacher information on this brochure including the content and language objectives available at my store. This is a brochure including the key vocabulary concepts elementary students need to master in a matter unit. The students provide the definitions and illustrations for each key concept.
I used this brochure during my third grade matter unit as an assessment piece. I met with my Guided Reading groups and used the science textbook. I reviewed the blank brochure, and discussed the vocabulary that needed defining, which was familiar to my students as matter had been introduced earlier in the week. Each group reviewed the features of a non-fiction book (table of contents, glossary, captions on pictures, bolded words) and reading a non-fiction text for information. I had everyone work on a rough draft and scaffolded the information as needed for each group’s ability level and needs.
The brochure could also be completed using anchor charts and other classroom tools or as a closed note test at the end of a unit. The teaching time will depend on the materials the students use to complete the brochure, if your students are using text to help them complete the brochure, I would plan on 2-3 hours of instructional time over 2-3 class periods.
