This Matter Bundle Pack will make teaching Next Generation Science Standards engaging and effortless! This pack includes a Matter Interactive Notebook, Matter Science Stations, Matter Writing Prompts, and Matter Task Cards.
Interactive Notebook: After incorporating interactive notebooks in every other subject I teach, I decided I couldn’t exclude science! This package includes 19 interactive notebook activities for a Matter Study. These activities are aligned to 5th grade Next Generation Science Standards and are sure to engage and excite your scientists. Most activities only include one page to copy (some require copying two pages), assembly directions and writing instructions are also included for students on each page. These activities require NO TEACHER PREP! As far as samples go, you can copy and laminate the sample pages I’ve included, if you plan to place activities in stations. If activities will be completed in whole group, then you can display the sample images on your Smart Board.
Aside from making student copies, allow students access to books and Internet documents to record relevant, factual information in each activity.
Interactive science notebooks serve as amazing reference tools and can be used as authentic assessments for students. They can do as much as they want to do! Encouraging artistic flair only adds to the enthusiasm!
Writing Prompts: This package includes 21 writing prompts about matter (mixtures, solutions, states of matter, chemical changes, physical changes, particles of matter). These prompts can be used in writing groups, as part of a whole group research project, and/or independently as an assessment. The prompt topics allow for easy integration of ELA and science. Prompts could be used to guide instruction and/or be used as an exit slip as a science “cool down.” I have also included Common Core aligned 5th grade writing explanatory and narrative scoring rubrics. These prompts are designed and aligned to meet the 5th Grade Next Generation Science Standards within your matter unit of study!
Science Stations: The activities in this package can be implemented in whole group during a Matter Unit, in small group science stations, or during your literacy block in literacy stations. These project-based science stations will have your students exploring matter to read and answer questions, conduct experiments, review vocabulary, play vocabulary games, conduct research projects, and explore matter through technology.
Reading Station: Provide books and Internet documents with copies of graphic organizers. Organizers can also be used as note-takers in your whole group instruction.
Topics For Organizers:
-properties of matter
Vocabulary Station: 20 terms and definitions are included in chart form for students to practice and glue in their notebooks. All 20 terms are included in a Matter Fiddle Strips! game. Prepare the game according to instructions for vocabulary fun!
Explore Science: 10 matter labs are included with materials lists and a lab form. Students could record lab results on their lab sheets or directly in their science notebooks. Lab sheets could also be completed and glued in their science notebooks.
Computer Station: 6 websites are listed (and hyperlinked) for students to visit. Videos and video quizzes are included on some of the sites. 4 website recording sheets are included for note taking and accountability.
Research Station: Students will record their research in An Element Fact File. These make great resources to keep in the classroom for future reference! Students will analyze photographs and explain scientific observations.
These activities are interactive and will keep students engaged throughout your Matter science unit! All activities and projects are designed and aligned to meet the 5th Grade Next Generation Science Standards.
Task Cards: This set of 28 Matter Task Cards focuses on particles of matter, properties of matter, chemical and physical changes, and measurement tools. This set can be used in science stations, whole group Scoot, whole group partner practice, and/or as test prep. I recommend printing, laminating and cutting the task cards. Place sets at a station or review center with recording forms for students. These task cards can be used at the beginning, middle, and end of your unit!
