Matter Science: Hands on Properties and Changes in State Activities

This is a matter unit that I use with my third graders. It uses simple supplies that you can find at any grocery story. All the lessons are hands on and interactive.

It includes a 17 page guide on how to teach the activities and a 13 page student packet that goes with the activities.

Properties of Matter Objectives:

Measure and compare temperatures of various samples of solids and liquids.

Measure and compare the mass (weight) and volume of solids and liquids.

Compare materials and objects according to properties such as size, shape, color, texture, and hardness.

Changes in Matter Objectives:

Describe changes water undergoes when it changes state through heating and cooling using terms melting, freezing, boiling, evaporation, and condensation.

Lesson Overview:

Properties of Matter
Time: 4 days (45-60 minute lessons)

Days 1-2: Measure and compare temperatures, weight, and volume of solids and liquids.
Day 3: Compare objects according to properties such as size, shape, color, texture, and hardness.
Day 4: Assessment

Changes in Matter
Time: 5 days (45-60 minute lessons)

Day 5: Explore how and why materials change state.
Day 6: Explore evaporation
Day 7: Explore condensation
Day 8: Explore changes in gas to liquid to solid
Day 9: Assessment
