Matter Unit - solid, liquid, gas, mixtures: This unit builds on students' previous knowledge of the terms solid, liquid, gas, solute, solvent, dissolve, and solution. It goes on to expand this knowledge into the different methods of separating substances in mixtures.
Mixtures are found in many different useful applications around us. Solutions and immiscible liquids are two types of mixtures to be taught at the elementary level and beyond. This paves the way for future knowledge about other types of mixtures like colloids and suspensions which are taught at the secondary/high school level. This knowledge about mixtures is used in contexts as simple as preparing meals and drinks in the kitchen to more complicated application as separating mixtures in factories, plants, and labs.
