Finally - maximal phonetic contrast pairs to help speech pathologists do the most effective phonology therapy! This set contains 16 photo and vector pairs for [k] and [r].
What makes them "maximal" contrasts?
- [k] is a voiceless velar stop (obstruent)
- [r] is a voiced palatal liquid (sonorant).
According to Gierut's research, teaching these two sounds in contrast to each other to a child who does not have [k] or [r] in his/her system will provide a generalization effect to all other error sounds in the child's system.
