Maximal Pairs is a therapy approach to address severe articulation and phonological disorders. It's a research-based, highly effective strategy for increasing intelligibility (Gierut, 2007). Maximal Pairs therapy contrasts words with 2 very different sounds, in a technique similar to Minimal Pairs. Sounds are chosen based on their significant differences with relation to manner, place, and voicing, as well as obstruent/sonorant characteristics. The keys to this therapy are the use of 2 sounds that are not in the child's phonemic inventory and the inclusion of phonemic awareness activities. Use the "Say it, Move it" technique for breaking down words and blending them back together with the target words, in addition to your drill activities, and you will be amazed at the progress you see!
I have been using this technique with my kiddos for the past 5 years and have seen amazing growth! It's easy and incredibly effective. The hardest part is choosing your target sounds and finding words to target those sounds. I can't do the first part for you, but I hope this will help you with the second part!
