PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

We spend so much time worrying about standardized tests and college admissions that many students fail to plan for what they will do once they GET to college. Help students think ahead to a competitive modern job market with this important real-world research project!

In this project, students first identify the college major and/or career field that they will later choose. Then, students do background research to create an annotated list of all the traits, skills, and experiences a boss would expect to see on a resume for a new hire. This annotated list is argumentative in nature because the student must then explain why those resume-boosters will make them not just qualified for a job but a competitive applicant. Students will "maximize their majors" by identifying the best ways to spend their college years to be work world ready.

Common Core-ready for any ELA high school class, this EDITABLE project can be conducted in as few as 2 or 3 days, depending on your expectations for the final product and how you assign class time vs. homework. There are also extra credit opportunities to raise the expectations for the final product.

This 3-page download includes:
Teacher’s Page, including essential questions, standards covered for Grades 6-8 and 9-10, suggestions for grading W.7 and W.8, a link to a related article for background reading, AND a link to a relevant TED talk to hook students on the topic.
Directions Page: introduce the project and set up students with clear directions
Rubric: Assesses CCSS writing standards; includes spaces for teacher feedback and self-assessment.
• Both the PDF and editable Word files are included.
