Congratulations! You are the proud parent of a human/animal hybrid. Your child’s genes have been combined with an animal’s genes to create a human/animal hybrid. First you will cross your genes with another parent’s genes. Then, you will add animal genes to create your hybrid. Use your knowledge of animal characteristics to predict the various traits that your hybrid will inherit. Students will use the characters from Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson to enhance their study of Genetics. By looking at the phenotypes and genotypes of various animals and themselves, students will create Punnett Squares to and create genetically accurate animal/human hybrids. Because all teachers became responsible for reading and literacy with the implementation of the Common Core Curriculum standards, this activity will enable teachers to help students learn genetics through literature in a fun and engaging way. This activity would complement a Biology or Life Science classroom well. This lesson is cross-curricular with bonus activities and integrates the English, Social Studies (Geography) and Art classrooms as well. An answer key is included.
