"We wear the mask not to hide, but to survive". This lesson is a perfect "follow up" plan to my Maya Angelou "Three Background Activities" lesson plan. This lesson can stand on its own or work as a compliment to a larger unit on I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS.
Maya was forced to "hide behind silence" as she took a vow not to talk after being attacked by a "family friend". In this chapter from I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS, Maya experiences a painful moment that almost broke her out of that silence. Students will have the opportunity to read "Lay My Burden Down" and connect its lessons with poems from Paul Laurence Dunbar and Maya Angelou.
This lesson contains the following:
+ Ready to Print copy of "Lay My Burden Down"
+ Attractive 7-slide powerpoint with quickwrite prompts, poetry, video and video link suggestion
+ Thought-Provoking Story Response handout
This lesson is an amazing substitute plan!!
