"We wear the mask not to hide, but to survive".
Maya wore a "mask" for five years, refusing to talk, after she was attacked by a family friend. In the story "Lay my Burden Down", Maya experiences a painful moment that almost broke her out of that silence. Students will have the opportunity to read "Lay My Burden Down" and connect its lessons with poems from Paul Laurence Dunbar and Maya Angelou.
