OBJECTIVE:
To appreciate the extent to which the Mayas, Aztecs, and Incas developed an advanced way of life prior to the arrival of Europeans in the New World.

TIME:
1 class period

You can begin this lesson by reading an introductory paragraph with the class, and going over the game rules.

The class is divided into two teams. Everyone reads to themselves sentences 1-13 about the Mayas. Then, if a person from Team 1 thinks they can recite one of the sentences word-for-word without looking at their paper, they will raise their hand. When called upon, that person must turn their paper face down and try to say the words in the sentence they have selected. If they can do it without making a mistake, their team scores the point value listed for that sentence. Team 2 then picks another statement and attempts to repeat it.

When a sentence is recited correctly, it is checked-off and cannot be used again. When a mistake is made, the other team can pick the same sentence or can select another statement in the list.

A person always has the option of attempting two or more sentences at the same time. But each statement must be said word-for-word or no points are scored.

About 10 minutes each is spent on the Mayas (sentences 1-13), Aztecs (14-28), and Incas (29-44).

Following the game, you can assign the Thought Questions on the last lesson page for homework. The questions help develop critical thinking skills, and student responses can be discussed at the beginning of the next class period.

Easy-to-follow Teacher Instructions and answer key included, along with a 20-question follow up quiz to measure student progress. The quiz can also be given as a homework assignment or used as a review exercise later in the school year.
