This place value mat functions just like the place value mat that students use when learning place value in their Math class. The only difference is that it designed based on the Mayan number system, which is a vigesimal number system (base 20). The mat is created on a tabloid size paper. Students were given seashells, popsicle sticks, and flat bottom stones/marbles that I purchased from the dollar store so that they could illustrate numbers in the Mayan form. Needless to say that students had a blast and some said that it help them gain a better understanding of place value in general.
