This activity is a good review of understanding how to "Evaluate Functions that are combined using Function Notation"
. This activity requires students to find the value
of the new function. This is an ALL IN ONE
product as it asks students to evaluate the "combination" of functions using these notations: (random input is used for clarifications)
• f(3) + g(3)
• (f + g)(3)
• f(-2) - g(-2)
• (f - g)(-2)
• f(0) . g(0)
• (f . g)(0)
• f(4) / g(4)
• (f / g)(4)
Eight Polynomial Functions (constant, linear, and quadratic) are given and named differently. Students are asked to evaluate the "combined function" at a specific value.
Students have the option to find the value of the function via one of these techniques:
1. Find the rule of the new function first, then plug in the given value in the new rule, OR
2. Evaluate each of the functions at the given value then combine using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Composition has to be evaluated from inside to outside.
You may ask students to use both strategies, or leave it up to them.
Please keep in mind that this maze focuses only on finding the value of the combined functions.
There are 15 questions provided in this maze. From start to end, the student will be able to answer 14 questions out of the 15 provided to get to the end of the maze. An optional answer form
is provided where students could use to show work.
This maze could be used as:
a way to check for understanding, a review, recap of the lesson, pair-share, cooperative learning, exit ticket, entrance ticket, homework, individual practice, when you have time left at the end of a period, beginning of the period (as a warm up or bell work), before a quiz on the topic, and more.
