McBroom and the Big Wind by Sid Fleischman makes students laugh out loud. Students identify hyperbole and the elements of a tall tale while reading McBroom and the Big Wind. As a culminating activity, students can create their own tall tale and publish it in a DIY pop-up book. In addition to reading McBroom, I listed other picture books that work well to demonstrate tall tale characteristics.
All or some of the materials can be used depending on the age of your students. I use this story with 4th graders, but it could be adapted for younger students.
