In this Simulation students have to try to guess who in their class are the Xs (Communists) by going around and questioning each other. This is a great way for students to see first hand how innocent people were accused of being Communists in the United States in the 1950s and how some Communists were never caught. This also leads a great discussion on McCarthyism and the scare it created in the United States during the 1950s. The students do the simulation, and then the teacher leads the discussion and questioning.
Students are given a folded up piece of paper some with an X labeled on it. The teacher will go through the steps in the directions that are attached and this will show the students a quick demonstration on people being accused of something they may not be.
I have done this with both Middle and High school and it has worked out great. The teacher just needs to be sure to really hammer in the connection between this simulation and that of the events of the 1950s.
