This Common Core close read, note taking, comprehension, vocabulary activity is meant to be used with the Literature Anthology Compare Text Story.
We created this to provide students with independent reading practice at the end of each week. McGraw Hill is teacher dependent most of the week. This allows students to read independently. This activity works well with a partner read too. Students discuss the story as they are completing the Note Taking graphic organizer and the Close Read questions.
Teachers can use this as an assessment, independent comprehension and vocabulary check for the week, guided group to further develop comprehension, or a substitute lesson.
1. Students read the text independently.
2. Students independently take notes after the second read of the text.
Close reading is the careful examination of text by the reader. Graphic Organizers offer another way in to take notes. The graphic organizers focus students’ attention on important aspects of the particular text.
3. Using their notes and the text, students complete the comprehension questions and vocabulary questions. The reader cites evidence from the text to support answers to questions about the text, to present to an argument or to support a conclusion made based on the text. Students need to be active when learning words. Students need multiple exposures to new words to master them—both in reading and writing.
Included for each week:
a) Note Taking Graphic Organizer
b) Comprehension questions (multiple choice, open ended requiring text evidence)
c) Vocabulary questions (context clues, multiple choice, and glossary/dictionary task)
d) Answer key with Common Core Standards
