This is a set of text dependent questions that correlate with the McGraw Hill Wonders Reading Series, "Bud, Not Buddy". I have created a set of questions that go along with the passage "Nancy's First Interview" found on workbook pages 213 and 214. The questions I have created require students to look back in the text to find their answers. Students are asked to identify the features of the text that make this passage historical fiction, explain the meaning of several idioms, compare and contrast 2 families, identify the problem & solution in the text, and include text evidence to support their answer. I encourage my students to highlight the portion of the passage that helps them find their answer. I believe this is a great way to prepare students to take standardized tests as well as form a habit of "proving" their answers by finding text support. This is a skill that students MUST conquer in order to be successful with the new common core standards.
The second portion of this assignment requires students to create the newspaper article that Mr. Jensen might have written after his interview with the Carter family. Students will be required to draw on prior knowledge about the Great Depression and to incorporate details from the passage into their article. They will also be asked to include the 5 W's and a catchy headline.
I have several other activities that correlate with this story. Please take a look and see if anything interests you. Thank you for considering my products. Please leave feedback if you enjoy using them in your classroom and to receive your TPT credits. THANKS!
