This is a set of text dependent questions that correlate with the McGraw Hill Wonders Reading Series, "Machu Picchu: Ancient City". I have created a set of questions that go along with the passages on "What was the purpose of the Nazca lines?" found on workbook pages 143 and 144. The questions I have created require students to look back in the text to find their answers. Students are asked to state both authors opinions of the Nazca lines and include text evidence to support their answer. I encourage my students to highlight the portion of the passage that helps them find their answer. I believe this is a great way to prepare students to take standardized tests as well as form a habit of "proving" their answers by finding text support. This is a skill that students MUST conquer in order to be successful with the new common core standards.
A writing prompt has also been included based upon both articles. The students are asked to write and opinion piece comparing and contrasting both authors articles. This is an effective way to prepare students for state writing assessments and the upcoming writing portions for PARCC.
