All About Me Bags are a fun way to build community at the beginning of the year. Students put objects in a bag that represent themselves and then share with the class. This is a popular ice breaker at the beginning of the year.
However, if you just tweak this concept a little bit, suddenly you have a spring board for a writing project. What if instead of just explaining how it represents you, students shared a special memory that the object makes them think of. Suddenly students are now practicing oral storytelling AND learning about each other.
After students talk about their memories they can then begin to plan a personal narrative writing project based off of one of their memories.
Obviously doing this will take a little more modeling and a little more planning, but with this guide it should be easy for you to do. I hope you find this helpful way to introduce students to each other AND personal narrative writing!
This bundle is packed with:
*Lessons ideas and sequencing
*Directions and cover sheets
I hope that you can turn your Me-bags into a multipurpose project in your classroom that not only builds community, but also serves as a pre-writing project and springboard into a unit on personal narrative writing. This packet will have everything you need to get started on this adventure!!
