(This is an extension on my other Maps Unit- its the same but incorporates ELA standards of Main Idea and details). This was created by our first grade team to align with the common core standards for first grade. This smartboard file contains an entire unit plan for map skills (3-4 weeks)! It starts out introducing features of a map (symbols, map key, compass rose, cardinal directions, etc.) There are links to read aloud books you can use from the website Pebble Go, BrainPop Jr. and Bookflix. *Note-for these links you do need a password/subscription to log into them first for access (our school has their own subscription to them). We also read the book “Me on the Map” and discuss each part of where we live in the world: my town, my state, my country, and continent, and my planet. You can customize it by plugging in your own state and town. We make a little book to go along with this lesson, and then go through each part, using Google Earth, and the online read alouds. We also do some map skills practice using an additional map book, where students can color the symbols, land, and water, use the compass rose, and do activities on the map. Both the map skills book and Me on the Map book that goes along with this unit are available for free! As part of our ELA standards, we integrate the reading skill of main idea throughout the unit as well and use a graphic organizer to write the main idea and 3 details of the text. We also focus in on vocabulary, and have lots of opportunities throughout the unit to build on vocabulary with pictures and activities for words such as map, globe, compass rose, cardinal directions, equator, symbol, map key, and legend. I hope this helps you as you develop or enhance your social studies and ELA curriculum!
