This Animated Step-by-Step ™ Science Project centers on the Life Cycle of Mealworms. Students are encouraged to create a ‘home’ for their mealworms, provide them with food (dry oatmeal and an apple slice), water, and a rock or shell on which to bask. The pen tools of the Interactive whiteboard can be used to chart their metamorphosis across a 4 week time period. There are also charts that encourage scientific discovery. How does your mealworms respond when you blow on them? … Tap the table? Use an eyedropper to drop some water on them?
If conducted at an activity center using the Microsoft PowerPoint app, paper and pencil charts can be provided to support this small group activity.
The symbols are automatically added to each page AFTER completing all the animations for that page. This sequence ensures that the upfront presence of symbol support does not ‘steal attention’ from the focus on literacy.
Intuitively this makes sense as it allows you to focus on the literacy and comprehension components first … then allows you to review what you just read and saw using the symbol support, e.g., “Now let’s re-read the page using our picture symbols.” This layered approach is also less likely to result in ‘visual overload’!
Symbol supported files are a great way to address a full academic and communication agenda in mixed ability classrooms! Hope you enjoy using this flexible resource.
