Use this hands-on activity to teach measurement to the quarter-inch as well as concrete understanding of the fractional notations on a ruler.
"How to use" ideas included, although I am sure there are other ideas: I used the "inch" pieces to have students construct the inch marks on the blank ruler. Then, I had them fold and label the blank "inch" piece and use to create/label the 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 lines. There were many AHAs and connections being voiced!
1) blank six-inch rulers (double up for twelve-inch rulers) (I used cardstock)
2) "inch" strips w/ blank for creating "fractions of an inch" (I used brightly colored paper)
3) colored version of #2
4) chart for gluing ruler onto and then recording measurements
