A Quick Description
Help your 2nd grade students become construction workers in your classroom! Students complete 10 measurement challenges that are real-world construction-themed math problems.
Print out all 10 construction tool posters and all 10 aligned challenges. Distribute them around your room. Give each child a recording sheet. Explain to students that they will become construction workers and will need to complete all ten challenges! They have to find all ten challenges you've left around the classroom and solve the challenge that the construction worker needs to complete. They use the recording sheet to mark off each challenge as they go.
How to Play
Step 1: Tell your class that they are construction workers today and will practice measuring with rulers. Students solve math challenges set up around the room. They can be completed in any order and you can choose how many challenges students complete or what time frame they have to meet YOUR needs.
Set-up is quick and easy. Simply print the 10 posters, the math worksheets, and a recording sheet for each student. Place them around your room and you’re ready to begin! Additional door décor, editable name tags, editable admission tickets, and themed banner are included if you want to use them!
Step 2: Let students move around the room and solve each challenge! Each time students solve a math challenge, they go to the teacher to get it checked. Students can work independently, in partners, or groups. Your choice!
Step 3: After students solve each challenge, let them get hands-on practice figuring out how long the line is on each poster with the rulers provided. There are 2 types of rulers: regular and every fourth-inch filled in.
Step 4: When students finish all ten challenges (or however many you assign), they win! You can give them the certificate of completion included. I also reward my students with a brick lollipops at the end.
Step 5: Most of the time, there are early or fast finishers! These kiddos get to go around the room and scan the QR codes provided! Each QR code leads to a fun fact about construction tools that they can record on the sheet provided or a piece of notebook paper.
