This word document provides a table for students to fill out containing items around a classroom to measure. Students are asked to estimate the size of the object, but must do so using the metric system. Often students are familiar with the size of an inch or foot, but have trouble estimating the size of a centimeter or millimeter. By making estimations and then actual measurements, students can immediately adjust their ideas about metric sizes.
This is a great introductory activity for students to practice using measuring tools. Some measurements also require help from a partner so is great for observing or improving teamwork among students.
With a few conclusion questions, students reflect on their work and determine if their measurements are accurate and that appropriate units are used.
