In my classroom, I use these sets of directions to have a measurement center with 23 separate activities. I show students how to use the materials one time, and then just change the requirements of the activities each week by trading out these directions. Students get hands on experiences and I get an easy to manage center that lasts for 23 weeks. There are 11 activities using units of weight, 7 activities with units of capacity, and 5 activities with units of length. Color code the directions on three different colors of paper for easy management.
Suggestions for materials to include in each of the three tubs are listed below:
Weight Tub: scales and weights for pounds, ounces, kilograms and grams, and five or six different objects of varying weight.
Capacity Tub: measuring spoons and cups, containers of various sizes including at least one container each for a pint, a quart and a gallon. (I use sand for them to pour into the containers. Easier to clean up than water.)
Length Tub: various rulers and five or six different objects of varying lenght.
