For those of you familiar with my Guided Math FAME structure,
this fits under the “M - Measurement & Data”
How were you feeling on the first day of school?
A great activity to discuss feelings with the whole class.
Students need to be able to identify their own feelings and
understand where their peers are coming from and this simple
graph activity can help start the year off right!
For ActivBoard users - this can easily be imported into
ActiveInspire and be used on the board. Students can practice
using classroom technology by taking turns to "color" in their box
to create a class graph.
Of course, this product can be used in paper form as well and
give students a chance to practice their fine motor skills with
coloring in their bar graph with crayons, colored pencils, or
The survey page of this product can be performed in large group
for the primary grades and independently in the upper grades. I
set up the table the way I did so it can be used however you feel
would work best for you. Students can make tallies as the class
reports their feelings in a large group meeting (such as morning
meeting or closing circle) or they can walk around and have their
classmates write their name in the appropriate column for their
feelings on the first day.
Some math curriculum does not spend much time on graphing and
I have found this activity, although very basic, can easily be used
to model analyzing of data and what a graph can show.
Please leave feedback for others and myself!
