Product Description
This is a resource I used in my classroom that has my students practice measurement skills and how to use various science equipment. This is a two part lab with the first day being the portion of the lab where students measure out their ingredients in groups using an electric scale and graduated cylinder (directions included on how to use and read both) and combine to make dough in detailed, step by step directions. After taking home and baking myself, I brought the "baking teams" cookies back and the second part was to take qualitative and quantitative observations on each group's cookies.

Part 1: Making the Cookies
Objective: Students are to practice using an electric scale and graduated cylinder while following step by step directions of the lab report

Materials per group:

Graduated cylinder
Plastic bag
Electric scale
2 mixing bowls
Paper plate
Spoon
Scoop
Flour
White sugar
Brown sugar
Baking soda
butter
salt
egg
vanilla
Chocolate chips
Cutting board
Plastic fork and spoon
Permanent marker
Spatula

Ingredients are in grams and milliliters so as to be able to use with a scale and graduated cylinder and allows for additional practice within the metric system.

Teacher notes include baking instructions

Additional Materials for teacher:
Gloves
Cooler or refrigerator if available
Baking items at home (cookie sheets etc)
Adjustments for food allergies can be made

Part 2: Qualitative and Quantitative Observations
Objective: Students are to practice making qualitative and quantitative observations using electric scales, triple beam balance and rulers.

Materials are for each station you plan on having:
Plastic gloves for each student
Triple beam balance
Electric scale
Rulers (metric)
Calculators (if need be)
Cleaning supplies (when lab is finished)

Students are to rotate between groups taking measurements of mass, weight and diameter/radius of sample cookies.
Once all measurements are finished students taste test one cookie sample and record their qualitative observations for their sample cookie.
