Measurement: How Big is a Foot?

This is a complete math/literature lesson plan for Kindergarten or Grade 1. It's to be used to launch a unit on measurement, and why we use standard units of measurement. The lesson starts out with the reading of the book How Big is a Foot by Rolf Myller. After the reading of the book, students measure objects in the classroom three different ways. First with their own foot, then the teacher's foot, and then a tape measure. They compare their results with their classmates and discuss questions such as, "Why would it be a problem if I was building a house and measured it in my feet and then told you to build it but you used the measurement of your feet? Would the house be smaller using your feet or my feet?".

It's a fun and engaging lesson to launch measurement and standard units of measurement!

It's a detailed lesson plan that I used for an observation. If you're being observed, this is a good plan to use!
