A unit on measurement is an excellent back-to-school science unit for middle school and secondary students. Get your students practicing the use of pipets with this hands-on, measurement activity. Students pipet multiple times from test tube to test tube to demonstrate their accuracy, and are surprised by the color change orchestrated by the phenolphthalein! Directions to prepare the three solutions without measurement are described so it doesn’t take a long time to set up for the activity.
A data table is provided for students to record the final volumes and colors of the three test tubes. A document camera image is included to visually show students the first step of the measuring procedure. Classroom management concerns are identified. The activity requires the availability of 10 ml pipets and pipet dispensers.
