One of the focuses of the common core for the younger grades is on non-standard measurement. I created several pages with tasks for children to use at school or at home where they measure every day objects. This resource consists of 16 pages plus a title page. Below is a look at how the pages are laid out.
Pages 1-5: Measure using non-standard measurement (this ranges from toilet paper tubes to popsicle sticks) 4 of the 5 pages ask students to compare 2 objects in length to find the difference. For instance, if they measured a shoe and book in glue sticks, they would then have to find out how much bigger the book is than the shoe.
Page 6: Measure using inches and then compare the measurements of two objects.
Page 7: This page incorporates estimation before students measure using a centimeters or inches.
Page 8-13: This is a set of 3 worksheets that are each 2 pages long. The student is given word problems where they need to solve the problem by drawing a ruler.
Page 14-15 This is a 2 page worksheet that incorporates word problems with length. A ruler could be drawn to solve some of the problems but it is not required.
Page 16 I have included a blank data page where students can measure objects using standard or non-standard measurement and record their information.
