Purpose: The overarching goal of this lesson is to teach students about measurement. This fits into the ‘bigger picture’ because it will help all students to connect with the shapes and figures that they learned in the previous unit on geometry. Students need to know about this because finding the area, perimeter, and volumes of figures are important.
Objectives: As a result of this lesson:
• Students will be able to identify, measure, describe, classify, and contrast various angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals.
• Students will be able to apply the concepts of perimeter and area to the solution of problems, and apply formulas where appropriate.
• Students will be able to find the areas of triangles and parallelograms, and develop strategies to find the area of more complex shapes.
• Students will be able to identify, measure, and describe circles and the relationships of the radius, diameter, circumference, and area, and use the concepts to solve problems.
