Introductory measurement unit:
Students will learn how to measure length, mass, volume, and density
• Students will learn difference in accuracy and precision
• Students will start to learn how to think through problems
• Students will learn how to use the whiteboards
This unit is designed to engage students in the learning cycle at the start of the school year. While most texts will begin chapter one with the Scientific Method, it is often difficult for students to fully grasp the process if they do not have hands-on experience. Most texts have a
generalized version of the Scientific Method since its application varies by the field of science. Recent surveys of scientists showed that there is disagreement on the specifics of the Scientific Method. For instance, some researchers do not formally generate hypotheses as they are
observing and describing situations rather than trying to determine cause and effect relationships.
