In this lesson students are solve word problems that involve converting units of metric and customary length, weight, time, and capacity. In addition to conversion they are also using the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to solve real world problems involving measurement. Students must also interpret measurement remainders like 1.5 liters, 6 ft. 3 in, or 2-1/2 hours.

The problems in this lesson start out simple and slowly build in complexity so that the levels of each learner in your class will be met.

This lesson packet includes:

⇒Instructional Guide

⇒Conversion Chart

⇒Partner Practice

⇒3-Page Independent Practice

⇒Challenge Page for Early Finishers

⇒Exit Quiz

This lesson is designed for 4th grade as it aligns perfectly to 4.MD.2, but could be used in fifth grade before the conversions get more complicated. (NOTE: All conversions in this lesson go from a larger unit to a smaller unit. In fifth grade students must also go form a smaller unit to a larger unit).
