Making Guided Math a little bit easier! That's what I was thinking of when I created this product. After playing around with Guided Math in my own classroom I have polished up one of my ideas for others to try.
In our Math Workshop the students participate in Standards-Based centers or rotations three days a week. In an effort to better communicate with my students the WHY of what they are doing I have organized my Math Workshop into my FAME structure.
F - Fact Fluency (CCSS - Operations and Algebraic Thinking)
A - Analyze and Describe Shapes (CCSS - Geometry)
M - Measurement and Data (CCSS - Measurement and Data)
E - Extending the Understanding of Base-10 (Numbers and Operations in Base10)
This has made identification of where they are starting their rotations and what Tub of materials they use much simpler as I can say "you are working at the M tub". I also love using this organization system with my Math Stars (gaining FAME) because the first grade standards can fit into it easily without it being obvious to my lower-ability students that they are working on mastering First Grade Math skills.
These "I Can Cards" are placed inside the tub with the materials at their rotation, referenced at the beginning of the week when directions are given, and used at my teacher table when stating their I Can before our small group activity.
Our principal (who is wonderful and continually inspiring me) is a strong believer in making the purpose front-and-center for our students so they may fully understand what they are working on. She has come into our classroom during Math Workshop and I have been proud of how my Super Second Graders can explain in their own words what they are working on at their rotation.
Students practice a skill from each of these standards weekly in an effort to keep building off their learning. I have a large ELL/ESL population on my classroom and this has proved to help them gain confidence in their Math Skills and achieve success.
