This is a bundle of four lessons designed to teach students how to construct picture graphs and bar graphs. The lessons are based on the Common Core State Standards Grade 2 Measurement & Data: Represent and Interpret data.
The lesson design uses a Learning Cycle that incorporates a three-phase model to encourage meaningful learning, particularly found to be effective for activities involving data collection and analysis.
The theme running through the four lessons is ‘Day at the Beach’ where a Grade 2 class from a hypothetical elementary school, Buttercup Elementary, goes on a field trip. The data collected from this field trip is used to introduce students to picture graphs and later to constructing bar graphs.
There are four lessons, details of each are described in the package.
Lesson 1—Students sort and group objects, use tables to represent data, and organizing data as picture graphs.
Lesson 2—Students use tables to represent data, use symbols to represent data, use one symbol to represent multiple units of data, and organizing data as picture graphs.
Lesson 3—Students organizing data as picture graphs, choose appropriate symbols to represent multiple sets of data, and decide what one unit represents.
Lesson 4—Students organizing data as bar graphs, choose appropriate scale for the vertical (y-axis), and recognize that the categorical variable goes on the horizontal (x-axis).
Resources required for each lesson, rubrics for assessment, and PowerPoint slides are included with this package.
Page count—34 pages lesson plans and resources plus 25 slides of PowerPoints
