I created this math project for my sixth graders in order to complete the unit on perimeter, area, volume, circumference, and angles. Students have to work individually and cooperatively in order to accomplish this task.
Once this project is introduced, it is really easy to let the kids loose and circulate the room to watch them problem solve! They love the discovery of the project and getting to teach their classmates!
This project covers sixth grade measurement concepts that include:
- perimeter of shapes
- radius, diameter and circumference of circles
- area of parallelograms and triangles
- surface area of a rectangular prism
- angle relationships
This project can be adapted for any other standard just by changing the ultimate task of the story.
This project also hits all Mathematical Practices of the CCSS as well as could be considered a DOK4 task with the extended amount of time it takes to solve, the requirement of collecting information, and the justification of any found solutions.
